TRECE MARTIRES CITY, CAVITE, Sept. 28 (PIA) – About 175 children and young adults with birth deformities such as cleft lip and cleft palate were given free surgery by Operation Smile Philippines (OPS) in two Operation Smile Cleft surgery mission.
The surgical mission was sponsored by Watson Philippines in celebration of A.S. Watson’s 175th Anniversary held simultaneously in Davao city and at the Pagamutang Bayan in Dasmariñas City.
Dedicated and highly skilled medical volunteers including non-medical volunteers extended their humanitarian service last September 17 until September 23 to patients from as far as Naga City who came to Cavite to avail of the free surgery.
Operation Smile Philippines is the very first in-country organization of Operation Smile International - a private, non-profit volunteer medical services organization and worldwide children’s medical charity with headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia.
Since 1982, OPS have treated over 22,000 Filipinos with facial deformities. With the oral cleft incidence in the Philippines estimated at one in every 500 live births, about 4,000 Filipino babies are born with cleft problems yearly. (Ruel Francisco, PIA-Cavite)
