MANILA - The Commission on Elections will ensure that the continuing voter's registration process will not disadvantage groups which, historically, have less-than-the-average registration and/or voter turnout. These includes women, Indigenous Peoples (IPs), Persons with Disabilities (PWDs),Internally Displaced Persons (IPDs), detainees, and senior citizens.
“The encoding of demographics and taking of biometrics data are sensitive processes, especially among these groups. Our field personnel are trained on how to properly identify and respond to these needs because we cannot emphasized enough the importance of cultural awareness and sensitivity to prevent disenfranchisement among these groups, “ Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said.
Section 2 of Comelec Resolution 10166 called for a gender and culturally-sensitive registration process, especially among women registrants. Local government units are encouraged to open their day care centers for women with small children on registrations days.
The Commission will also conduct mandatory satellite registrations in areas where there are IPs, IPDs, PWDs, and detainees, in every barangay nationwide to ensure wider voter participation among these groups.
“We want the voter registration process to be inclusive. As long as you are qualified, then you should enjoy your right to vote,” Jimenez added. (COMELEC)
