BFAR on guard in Carigara Bay and Naval waters in East Visayas after reported cases of paralytic shellfish poison

MANILA – The Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) said it has dispatched provincial fisheries personnel in the coastal areas of Carigara Bay in Samar and Naval Waters in Biliran province to reiterate public advisory against harvesting, selling, buying and eating all types of shellfish and alamang (Acetes sp.) gathered from the said areas after eight recorded incidents of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning including two fatalities.

BFAR has already requested the barangay government officials of Balaquid, Cabucgayan and Tukdaw, Kawayan, Biliran as well as the Provincial Health Office, the Municipal Agricultural Offices of Biliran and Carigara to help spread the information to neighboring barangays until BFAR issues a new shellfish bulletin declaring the areas free of red tide.

The Provincial Fisheries Office in Biliran has likewise inspected markets around Naval and Biliran and in nearby areas to seize and confiscate shellfishes but found none sold in the markets. The Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) incident in Biliran waters resulted in the shellfish poisoning of a total of eight victims.

Official report from BFAR Region 8 said seven of the eight victims were brought to the Biliran Provincial Hospital on December 21 and 23 after eating leaf oysters (Isognomon ephippium sp.), locally known as masabay or sabay. As of this writing, six of the eight victims have fully recovered while the two other victims died—an 81-year old man and a 9-year old girl.

Meanwhile, BFAR continues to monitor other coastal waters positive with HAB, i.e. Irong-Irong and Cambatutay Bays, Western Samar; Matarinao Bay, Eastern Samar; coastal waters of Leyte; coastal waters of Calubian and Carigara Bay, Leyte; Naval, Biliran Island province; Gigantes Islands in Carles, Iloilo; Daquis and Tagbilaran City, Bohol (Shellfish Bulletin No. 38, dated December 20, 2016); and ensure that there is no domestic movement of all types of shellfish and Acetes sp. or alamang in these areas as they are not safe for human consumption.

However, in areas where there is HAB occurrence, BFAR informs the public that fish, squids, shrimps and crabs are safe for human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking. (BFAR)
