Various sectoral representatives including entrepreneurs and media participated in the Department of Trade and Industry organized ASEAN/EU-GSP+ Multisectoral Briefing at the Crown Plaza Hotel, Quezon City.

DTI Calabarzon Regional Director Marilou Quinco-Toledo emphasized in her opening address that Calabrazon is the country’s leading region in terms of production and manufacturing. Director Toledo also reiterated the role of media present to communicate information properly to the public in order to encourage the various sectors to join.

“Forum itself aims to who how MSMEs can be part of the global market” Director Toledo stated.

EU Trade Related Techinical Assistance Team Leader and Key Expert Dr. Florian Alburo also added the importance of entrepreneurs working with the government in order to remove unnecessary barriers and restrictions which get in the way of trade through dialogues between the public and private sectors.

Dr. Alburo also highlighted the Philippines as an archipelago and its implications on national trade. Unlike other ASEAN countries, the Philippines is one that does not have a full appreciation of borders due to it being the most archipelagic country within the Southeast Asian region unlike its neighbors with directly adjacent countries. Upon crossing borders there are completely different cultures and products and along with it comes new opportunities to trade and introduce products.

The EU Trade Key Expert also added however that while local entrepreneurs can cross the border and trade with other countries, the country would also be open to other investors creating competition.

Alburo also warns that Filipinos appreciate quality and are willing to pay the price which often leads to frequenting foreign brands instead of local ones. Due to this, the opening of borders and diversity of trade should also translate to improvement of quality and standards of local products.

“Strive for quality because people pay for quality” added Dr. Alburo.

Part of the program included testimonials from entrepreneurs to further supplement the importance of readiness to provide quality products and services in a competitive setup. Speakers include Cocoplus Aquarian Development Corporation Vice President Jeraldine Bautista, Pasciolo Agri-ventures General Manager Maura Pasciolo and Association of Laguna Food Processors (ALAFOP) President Clarke Nebrao.

Cocoplus produces centrifuge extracted virgin coconut oil while Pasciolo Agri-ventures specializes in natural products such as coconut jam, coconut vinegar and virgin coconut oil and; ALAFOP operates under DTI’s shared services (SSF) program to produce various locally-produced food products.

DTI Undersecretary Zenaida Maglaya and Export Marketing Bureau Director Senen Perlada were also present to address stakeholders and DTI Regional and Provincial directors and staff. (GG/PIA4A)
