The Deparment of Trade and Industry pushes for more competitive MSMEs in both the global and domestic trade in line with the ASEAN and PH – EU markets at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Quezon City

Entrepreneurs and media practitioners of the Calabarzon region gathered for the AEC and PH-EU Briefing held January 18 to learn, disseminate and implement the agency’s thrust to empower local businesses in order to compete with the global scene and imported products which find their way to the Philippine market.

Export Marketing Bureau Director Senen Perlada gave further information towards the globalization in the context of the AEC and PH- EU through stressing the need to gain international markets for MSMEs particularly through the use of internet.

Director Perlada dubbed the internet as an equalizer for MSMEs who can access the same data which larger companies.

“The internet makes traders of us all whether it be goods, data or services, all this 24/7 and borderless.” The Director added.

DTI Undersecretary Zenaida Maglaya who was also present during the forum started off with a strong statement and a challenge to local businesses.

“We have no right to be poor. With all the opportunities we have, why can’t we make it?” Usec. Maglaya stressed in Filipino as she encouraged local entrepreneurs.

According to the undersecretary, Calabarzon is number one in terms of GDP contributions, number two in agriculture and number two in agriculture.

“We have the natural resources, we have the human resources, we (Calabarzon) have it all but why are we having a hard time? It is not enough that we know what the market is. It is not enough that we know what the products are. We have to be competitive”, said Usec. Maglaya.

The undesecretary added that MSMEs should be meticulous in product standards, packaging and meeting the demands of the market. In order to meet these standards DTI also works with various methods and sources for microfinancing.

“We also have a big demand in the domestic market. We need to look locally as well and ensure that imported brands do not dominate our local markets. There are MSMEs that must start at the local market not all MSMEs can export immediately.”

DTI assists local businesses locally through trade fairs, product development and Negosyo Centers.

“We have 447 nationwide and in Calabarzon I think we have 35 centers and we have fund this year for additional centers nationwide. Our 150 center target last year? We doubled it and went way above our targets. Our MSME assistance goes on and we find other ways to expand our markets. We have markets, financing and training programs to improve how we do things and be competitive and improve the quality of our products”

Usec. Maglaya added however that DTI currently has no funds for shared service facilities this 2017 as per Secretary Ramon Lopez. Maglaya said however that the secretary stated that the agency and local entrepreneurs should not stop submitting proposals for budgeting in 2018 in the meantime.

“We need cooperators who are ready and willing to work with us and who reciprocate what they need. Because we in the government do not completely know all of an entrepreneurs needs,” said Maglaya as she called for capable business groups and MSMEs to give feedback to the agency.

“The bottomline is that we really need to work together. We are not just talking about DTI but we are talking about the entire government machinery. We have partners such as DOST, DOLE, TESDA & DA among others. We cannot do this alone.”

Aside from the government partners, Usec. Maglaya acknowledged the vital role of groups such as the SME Development Council.

According to Maglaya, the government may not immediately find a solution to feedback or issues discussed by the local business sectors but we have to work together to see how to make things happen.

“Our country has so much potential and like we always say, we only have one country so let us see what we can do to make our mark. Branding in itself is important. If we can really go in to brand development, whatever product it is that we can proudly say is ‘The’ Philippine brand, let’s work on it. Because in the end it is the Philippines which we are selling and we should all be proud to be Filipino”, Usec. Maglaya concluded.

Also present during the mulitsectoral forum were directors and staff of the DTI provincial offices of Calabarzon headed by Regional Director Marilou Quinco-Toledo. (GG/PIA4A)
