MANDALUYONG CITY - Philippine Red Cross (PRC) and the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA) recently, sealed their 10 years of partnership with aMemorandum of Agreement signed between representatives of the organization at the Asian Institute for Maritime Studies (AIMS).
The MOA was signed by PRC Chairman Richard Gordon, who is also a Rear Admiral of the PCGA, and PCGA National Director Vice Admiral Valentin B. Prieto Jr. and Deputy for Administration Rear Admiral Geronimo P. Reyes.
The collaboration aims to establish a regular semi-annual Mobile Blood Donation program nationwide to ensure enough supply of safe and quality blood and blood products all over the country. It also aims to raise awareness among PCGA volunteers that donating blood is not only good for one’s health but also a humanitarian act that can save millions of lives.
“We welcome this partnership with the PCGA which has been a long time partner of the Philippine Red Cross in our advocacies, especially in the promotion of voluntary blood donation. I cannot overemphasize the continuous need to maintain an adequate supply of blood to ensure that we can continue giving the gift of life to those who need it, especially the most vulnerable,” said Chairman Gordon.
Also part of the agreement is to make the 10,000 PCGA members nationwide part of the Red Cross 143 who can be tapped to assist the PRC in responding to emergencies, disasters and other mass casualty incidents. Since PCGA has marine and naval trained members, they will also provide their members as crew of PRC amphibian vehicles when needed.
"This MOA with the PRC is a step forward in strengthening ties and fostering good relations between the two organizations," said Cdr. Rosario, who represented Coast Guard Officer-In-Charge Commo. Joel Garcia.
The signing was also graced by PRC Secretary General Oscar Palabyab, PRC Governor and PCGA Director for External Affairs Commo. Jorge Lim and PRC Director of National Blood Services Dr. Christine Monina Nalupta.
Together with the MOA signing, a simultaneous blood letting activity was conducted, which was participated by over 1,000 donors from the PCGA, AIMS, Heritage Hotel, Forza Group of Companies, City Services Corp., and Momms Japan.
The nationwide blood-letting activity collected a total of 1,277 blood units.(PRC)
