Udupi (alternatively spelled as Udipi and "ಉಡುಪಿ" in Kannada), also known as Odipu in Tulu, is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is the administrative headquarters of Udupi District. Udupi is notable for the Krishna Temple and lends its name to the popular Udupi cuisine. It is also known as Lord Parasurama Kshetra, and is famous for Kanakana Kindi. A centre of pilgrimage, Udupi is also known as Rajata Peetha and Shivalli (Shivabelle). Manipal is a locality within Udupi city.

Udupi a land of ethereal beauty, sandwiched between the verdant mountains of the western ghats on the east and the vast, tranquil Arabian Sea on the west. The unique feature of the Krishna Matha Temple is that devotees can view Lord Krishna only through the small window which has nine holes, and hence also called as Navagraha Kitiki. The window is beautifully carved and silver plated. Men have to enter the temple shirtless. Had a very good pleasant experience. Temples of Udupi District in the Karnataka state are popular for the temple festivals and rituals. The Udupi district was created in August 1997. The three northern taluks, Udupi, Kundapur and Karkala, were separated from Dakshina Kannada District to form Udupi district. Udupi is a famous pilgrimage, particularly for Asta Math, i.e. eight Matts and Sri Krishna Temple. Udupi is also one of oldest religious educational centers.

Manipal the International Educational town of west coast of southern India. The district is famous quality education. Manipal educational institution is best among one in the country.

Kundapur is the headquarters town of the taluk is about 36 kms from Udupi. This name can be traced to the Kundeshvara temple built by Kundavarma in the vicinity of the Panchagangavalli river. The district also many tourist places and beaches and beach resosrts.

Karkala situated about 35 kms. from Udupi, is the headquarters of the Karkala Taluk. About, 52 kms. north-east of Mangalore, is known primarily for the statue of Lord Bahubali (Gomateshwara). The 45-feet tall statue is estimated to weigh 80 tons.

Udupi, an important Teerthasthal (pilgrimage place) with its historical Krishna Temple is the cultural center of Karnataka. The district, carved out of Dakshina Kannada district, has its own identity in the field of art and culture. a hamlet of Padu village about l2 kms south of Udupi Kaup is situated on the coastal belt, which passes through the West Coast National Highway. Marda Heggade, a chieftain, rose to power here during the Vijayanagara days. It has an old lighthouse, the guiding star of navigators who are warned of the presence of dangerous rocks in the sea.
