QUEZON CITY - Interior and Local Government Secretary Ismael 'Mike' D. Sueno said that the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) worked closely with the Cavite Export Processing Zone in suppressing the fire that hit a huge factory inside the ecozone last Wednesday.
Sueno said that while the area is within the Cavite ecozone which is bound by certain laws, the BFP and the PEZA fire force did their best to prevent the fire that broke out in the House Technology Industries (HTI) from further escalating and doing more damage.
HTI, a Japanese manufacturing plant specializing in the assembly of prefabricated housing construction materials and production technologies, is within the Cavite Export Processing Zone.
Republic Act 7916 or “The Special Economic Zone Act of 1995” gives the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) the legal right to provide and establish firefighting forces to ensure the enforcement of existing laws and regulations governing fire prevention, protection and safety within ecozones.
Sueno explained that while PEZA is in-charge of fire inspection and fire prevention in ecozones under RA 7196, it still actively collaborated with the BFP during actual fire incidents within the ecozone.
“We see no issue if ecozones have their own firefighting forces because this only goes to show that they are responsible enough to take charge of enforcing fire safety measures within their areas. What is important is the BFP is always ready to help and extend a helping hand during conflagrations and other similar emergencies,” he said. (DILG)
