HE Dr. Teerakiat Jareonsettasin, Thailand’s Minister of Education and also the President of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Council, visited the Philippines last 18-19 April for a brief dialogue with the Department of Education and the SEAMEO Centers in the country.

“My visit today not only encourages me, but also gives me some kind of a glimpse of the future” the Minister mentioned in his opening speech.

His Excellency and officials of the Thai Education Ministry were briefed on the operations of the 3 SEAMEO Centers in the Philippines; namely SEARCA, INNOTECH, and TROPMED Philippines. During the briefing, the cetners introduced their programs, projects and services, as well as major accomplishments for the past year.

The 3 Regional Centers’ contribution to the country’s research agriculture, educational innovation and technology and public health were highlighted during the dialogue. The Centers also expressed their gratitude to the Philippine Government and the Department of Education for its support for the programs and operations. More collaborative projects and partnerships with the education Ministry of Thailand and other SEAMEO Centers were planned to serve the demands of education in the region. The Minister also applauded the success of the Centers for staying strong and sustaining its operations through the years.

“The Philippines is lucky to have some of the oldest SEAMEO Centers. I would like to congratulate you for the success, strength, and sustainability you’ve done” his Excellency said as he encouraged the Centers to continue the good work and strive for better.

This visit to the country is part of the SEAMEO Council President’s round of visits that is customary during a Council President’s term.
