QUEZON CITY -- State weather bureau PAGASA on Friday raised public awareness and compliance to use the Philippine Standard Time (PhST) through its media and government agency partners.

“We encourage the public to synchronize their timepieces with the Philippine Standard Time. Our agency displays the official time on its website, www.pagasa.dost.gov.ph,” Administrator Dr. Vicente Malano said in observance of the National Time Consciousness Week held every first week of the year.

Malano said the public can also check the official time through the use of Network Time Protocol (NTP) Server System: ntp.pagasa.dost.gov.ph; ntp1.pagasa.dost.gov.ph; ntp2.pagasa.dost.gov.ph; ntp3.pagasa.dost.gov.ph; 202.90.128.226

“Currently, PAGASA makes use of the state-of-the-art Cesium Beam Atomic Clock and a host of other systems to ensure that we are following precise time,” he added.

Under Republic Act 10535 or the Philippine Standard Time Act of 2013 authored by Sen. Miriam Santiago, PAGASA has been designated as the official timekeeper and the sole agency that determines the PhST.

The same law enjoins all national and local government agencies to coordinate with PAGASA once a month to synchronize their official timepieces and devices.

On the other hand, the National Telecommunications Commission has been tasked to have jurisdiction over all private television and radio stations and ensure that they comply with the law. Failure to do so carries a fine of not less that P30,000 but not more than P50,000 and in case of a second offense, revocation and cancellation of their franchise.

Malano said the synchronization of time by government agencies and broadcast networks is expected to prompt ordinary Filipinos to also follow the PhST. (PIA-NCR/EPC/JCP)
