Lucena City - The Integrated Provincial Health Office of Quezon Province through its National Immunization Program (NIP) has intensified its campaign to educate more health care practitioners and midwives about strengthening routine immunization and vaccine-preventable diseases as they organized a two-day Basic Immunization Training for Private Lying-in Midwives at Ouans Worth Farm and Resort, Lucena City recently.
The “Reaching Every Purok” (REP) strategy was established to ensure that children less than 5 years old especially those living in far-flung areas are given immunization against childhood Tubercolosis, Rotavirus, Measle-Mumps-Rubella, Polio and Dipthteria-Pertusis-Tetanus-Hepatitis B-Haemophilus influenza as well as pneumonia.
The said training aims to edify private lying-in midwives or skilled-birth attendants to improve the access to routine immunization and train them to inform parents or legal guardians of the availability, nature and benefits of immunization against vaccine-preventable diseases at birth. Moreover, participants are trained to follow through with this strategy which includes collating data on vaccinated children, strengthening links between community and the health sector and supportive supervision among others.
Discussions on the Expanded Program on Immunization regarding diseases, vaccines, cold chain and logistics, delivery of immunization services and REP strategy was done on the first day of the training while Adverse Events following Immunization (AEFI), Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI), Newborn screening and reporting forms was tackled on the second day.
Addressing the private lying-in midwives attending the two-day confab, Ms. Joeann Reyes, the NIP Program Manager said that the Basic Immunization Training will improve vaccination coverage in Quezon Province by hostilely delivering vaccines to geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas most especially the island municipalities.
The activity was organized by the Integrated Provincial Health Office headed by Dr. Grace V. Santiago, Provincial Health Officer II and members of the Technical Working Group of the Quezon’s First 1000 Days of Life Program. (Quezon-PIO)
