Department of Health (DOH) – CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) yesterday have conducted a surprise random drug testing (RDT) activity among employees of the regional office located at the Quirino Memorial Medical Center Compound in Project 4, Quezon City.
“Substance abuse contributes to significant interruption in the country’s workplaces. It is the leading cause of absenteeism, tardiness, and on-the-job injuries. Even with our government’s effort to curb drug problem, still there are those who persistently use illegal drugs,” Regional Director Eduardo C. Janairo stated during the opening of the RDT activity.
“A drug-free workplace fosters productivity, promotes safety, improves one’s performance and the company as a whole,” he added.
RDT is still the most effective type of drug screening to enhance workplace safety. Urine test is used to detect drug users because it is easy to administer, cost efficient, publicly accepted and already proven effective.
Janairo stressed that RDT activities are done in support to Republic Act 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 mandates the development of drug free policies, programs and enforcement of penalties for drug related crimes and CSC Memorandum Circular No. 13, series of 2010 entitled ‘Guidelines for a Drug-free Workplace in the Bureaucracy. ‘ Also The RDT activity is a joint effort of the DOH-CALABARZON Regional Office, the Dangerous Drug Board (DDB), the National Research Laboratory, the Dangerous Drugs Abuse & Prevention & Treatment Program (DDAPT).
“This activity is also in response to the intensified anti-drug campaign of our government in eliminating illegal drugs and eradicating drug users in the government service, especially in the health sector.” Dr. Janairo emphasized.
The surprise RDT activity targeted 300 employees of DOH-CALABARZON.
According to 2015 survey conducted by the Dangerous Drug Board (DDB), there are 1.8 million estimated drug users in the country.
Age of drug users ranges from 10-69 years old. Most users are male, in their 30s, single, unemployed, high school graduate and commonly found in urban areas.
The most commonly abused drugs in the Philippines includes marijuana, shabu (methamphetamine), heroin, cocaine, opium, ecstasy and inhalants such as rugby.
