LUCBAN, QUEZON – Members of Dator family celebrated last Aug. 3 the 54th foundation anniversary of Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) here.

The SLSU, home to about 14,000 students coming from all over the province and studentscoming from adjacent towns of neighboring Laguna and Batangas provinces, started as LucbanMunicipal Junior High School in 1964, according to Hobart Dator, Jr., son and namesake ofSLSU founder and celebrated guerrilla leader of this town.

On Aug. 3, Dator Jr., his older brother, ex-Lucban mayor Serafin, his older sister, Ester; incumbent mayor Oliver Dator’s mom, Christian, and his cousin, Imelda went to SLSU and simply posed beside the concrete bust monument of the SLSU founder and Dator patriarch to commemorate his memory and honor.

The marker accompanying the bust monument showed the SLSU’s historical beginning asLucban Municipal Junior High School on Aug. 3, 1964 and the names of Dator Sr., his then vice mayor Eriberto Abulencia and 8 other municipal councilors during their term from 1963 to 1967.

The bust monument was installed during the 50th founding anniversary of SLSU under the school administration of Dr. Cecilia Gascon and the municipal administration of Mayor Celso OlivierDator.

Dator Jr. fondly recalled how his father enrolled and graduated in high school he founded, then went on to found college and also completed his course while all along being mayor of the town.

“Nagkaklase pa noon sina Tatay at si Mayor Apin sa Lucban Community College na ngayon ay SLSU na,” Dator, Jr. told Sentinel Times, calling his older brother Serafin by his nickname,Apin.

“Imagine, Tatay graduated from the high school he founded at si Doña Josefa Edralin Marcos,Pres. Marcos mom, ang guest of honor noon,” Dator Jr. said.

Dator Jr. said his father and national economist Dr. Rene Ofreneo graduated together in 1967while his brother Apin and veteran journalist Fel Maragay graduated the following year and heand artist Uro dela Cruz graduated together in 1969 when the school was already renamedLucban National High School.

Then Quezon 1st district Cong. Rafael Nantes moved to initiate a resolution in congress renamingSouthern Luzon Polytechnic College to SLSU.
