LUCENA CITY – A former House of Representatives deputy speaker and Quezon 4th district...Turn to p/3 congressman and a scion of a well-known political family in national politics who is running for senator in the May 13, 2019 elections has drawn the support of another scion of a local political family who has been in public service for the same period of time.
Congressman Lorenzo ‘Erin’ Tanada III, grandson of the ‘grand old man of Phil. politics’, Lorenzo Tanada and son of former senator Wigberto Tanada has filed his certificate of candidacy on the last day of filing for various candidates in the midterm elections next year.
Hobart Dator, Jr., son of namesake Hobart Sr. a Quezon Medalya ng Karangalan awardee for public service who was a former Lucban mayor, board member and vice governor, has called for unity and support for Erin Tanada’s election in the Senate.
“Kahit maglaban-laban tayo sa probinsiya pero pagdating sa nasyunal ay magkaisa tayo at suportahan natin ang isang Tanada para may boses muli ang mga taga Quezon sa Senado,” Dator Jr. said in a brief interview here last week.
He said that the Tanada and Dator’s families have gone a long way in public service, covering almost 7 decades now, with the Tanadas fighting for the country mostly at the national level while the Dators served at the local level.
“Kilala ko ang mga Tanadas at kasabayan sila ng mga Dator mula pa noong 1950’s, dahil ang matandang Lorenzo noon at ang aking namayapang ama ay sabay sila sa public service,” said Dator Jr. who himself served in various capacities spearheading advocacies in the areas of environment, transportation and politics while remaining a private citizen.
The young Tanada is among the 8 candidates to be fielded by the united opposition in the senatorial race which include former Solicitor General Florin Hilbay, election lawyer Romulo Macalintal, former senator Mar Roxas, Magdalo partylist Rep. Gary Alejano, senator Paulo Benigno Aquino IV, College of Law dean of the De La Salle University Jose Manuel Diokno and former member of the Bangsamoro Transition Commission Samira Gutoc.
Dator, who stand firmly for moral reforms in national and local governance, has been at the forefront of reforms in the transport sector as president of Southern Luzon Bus Operators Association and spearheaded protection of the environment as leaders in Save Mt. Banahaw Movement and opposition to the division of the province into Quezon del Norte and Quezon del Sur in Save Quezon Province Movement and advocated local judicial reforms to decongest the provincial jail.
