LUCENA CITY - After being detained at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) custodial facility in Manila, the three policemen who have been charged for the murder of a Quezon town mayor’s son and his aide are now finally committed at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Pagbilao, Quezon.
NBI-Quezon chief Dominador Villanueva said Judge Dennis Orendain of Lucena City Regional Trial Court, Branch 53 issued the committment order during the case’ supposed arraignment last Friday.
Lawyer Aris Burgos, the counsel for accused Supt. Mark Joseph Laygo, PO1 Robert Legazpi and PO2 Lonald Sumalpong tried to oppose the ruling citing security reasons but Orendain maintained his order, Villanueva said.
However, Villanueva said Orendain granted Burgos’ manifestation that the scheduled arraignment for his clients be differed on grounds that his they have filed a petition for review before the Department of Justice (DOJ) and that they are still awaiting for its resolution.
But though the differment was granted, Villanueva said Orendain gave the three accused only up to May 31, saying the court would proceed to the arraignment that day even if the petition is yet to be resolved by the Justice Department.
Villanueva said Burgos’ move was a clear dilatory tactics.
Escorted by NBI agents led by NBI- Quezon Executive Officer Ferdinand Dagdag and Special Investigator Raul Tepace, the three accused cops were taken to the jail undergoing medical examination at the City Health Office.
Laygo, Legazpi and Sumalpong are the suspects in the killing of Christian Gayeta, 21, son of Sariaya Mayor Marcelo Gayeta 21 and Christian Manalo, 38, in Tayabas City on the night of March 13.
