The traditional celebration of the Holy Week was generally peaceful, Calabarzon police officials said on Sunday.
“Yes, observance of Holy Week is generally peaceful,” Police Regional Office (PRO4A) Regional Director, PBGEN Edward E Carranza said in an interview.
Carranza attributed the peaceful observance of Holy Week to the strict implementation of the “Oplan Ligtas Sumvac 2019”, nationwide coordinated police operations aim to provide security during Lenten season and summer vacation.
The police official also ordered the deployment of more police personnel in larger parishes around the province.
Carranza said 100 percent of PRO4A personnel have been on duty since Holy Wednesday, April 17.
Much of PRO4A’s deployment is concentrated on big parishes to secure the faithful attending religious activities like the dawn mass and Sugat, or “the reenactment of the passion, death and resurrection of Christ,” on Easter Sunday, April 21, he said.
The PRO4A ensured that criminal elements will not take advantage of people attending religious activities, especially on Easter Sunday, she added.
Police will focus their security preparations on beaches and resorts on Easter Sunday since they expect many to flock to these places to celebrate the end of Lent.
Carranza reiterated his appeal to the travelers, including those using their own vehicles, to take extra precaution by observing traffic rules and speed limits to prevent vehicular accidents.
He also advised the commuters to avoid wearing expensive pieces of jewelry and to look after their belongings and constantly check them.
PNP chief, Gen. Oscar Albayalde announced that the PNP has deployed 91,000 cops nationwide “for route security target hardening, and security operations in places of convergence and transportation hubs”.
