The slain village Kagawad shortly after he was gunned down

LUCENA CITY--- A village Councilman was killed while after he was attacked by a lone gunman near a railway along Dalahican Road at Brgy. Mayao Crossing, here, on Thursday night.

City police director, Supt. Reydante Ariza said Ariel Sotomayor, 49, number one Kagawad of Brgy. Ibabang Dupay suffered two gunshot woundsin and died on arrival at the hospital. Ariza said a bystander identified as Bong Alarcon, 15, sustained a minor stray bullet in the hand.

Officer on case PO2 Jeff Comendador said the incident happened at 8:15 while Sotomayor was driving his motorcycle together with his wife on their way home from a basketball court where he served as coach of his team in an Inter Barangay Basketball Tournament.

“While descending on a railway, a lone male gunman wearing a bonnet suddenly approached them and shot Sotomayor three times in close range hitting him in the head and body. But the gunman spared his wife who was unhurt”, said Comendador.

He said the suspect quickly fled on board a get away vehicle toward the direction of City proper.

Sotomayor and Alarcon were rushed to St. Anne Hospital but the former was declared dead on arrival.

Police are still digging deeper into the incident.Quezon police director, Senior Supt. Ramil Montilla ordered Ariza to have the case resolved as early as possible.

Aside from being a senior village councilman, Sotomayor is also engaged in construction bisiness.
