The Quezon provincial board of election canvassers composed of chairperson Atty. Sheryl Moresca-Julie, vice chair Atty Alberto Viscocho and Dr. Merthel Evardome as member-Secretary proclaim Quezon governor-elect Danilo Suarez (center), vice governor- elect Sam Nantes (2nd from right) and Quezon 1st district board member-elect Jerry Talaga (2nd from left) at the Sang. Panglalawigan conference hall in Lucena City.
LUCENA CITY – It was hailed as a political battle in Quezon province between the 2 political families of Suarez vs Alcala, the fight between House minority floor leader and 3rd district Cong. Danilo and his son Gov. David ‘Jayjay’ Suarez against 2nd Dist. Cong. Vicente ‘Kulit’Alcala and his brother, former agriculture chief Proceso ‘Procy’ Alcala.
After the day of reckoning on May 13 midterm elections under the Duterte administration, it was a clear and resounding victory for the elder Suarez over his rival in the gubernatorial fight and the young outgoing governor as against the comebacking agriculture chief who seeks to reclaim his former post in the 2nd district.
According to the certificate of canvass of the Provincial Board of Canvassers (PBOC) led by Atty. Sheryl Moresca-Julie, the gubernatorial race has Danny Suarez obtaining 588,929 votes over Kulit Alcala who got 249,750 or a vote margin of 339,179.
On the other hand in the 2nd congressional district race, Jayjay Suarez got 178,285 votes against Procy Alcala’s 125,629 or a 52,656 lead vote.
The young Suarez was proclaimed around 1:35am on Friday while his father, who will be succeeding him at the provincial capitol on July 1, was proclaimed on the same day at almost 5pm at the Sangguniang Panglalawigan conference hall here.
Their delayed proclamations was owing to the alleged malfunction of Secure Digital or SD cards which caused the delay of transmission from the municipalities of Real, Sariaya, Candelaria, Tiaong and Catanauan to the PBOC composed of Moresca-Julie as chairperson, Atty. Alberto Viscocho, vice chair and Merthel Evardome, member-secretary.
The father and son Suarez are both ending their terms as congressman and governor and the latter decided early last year to set up residence in Tiaong town, in the province’s 2nd district as he planned for his bold congressional foray in the district being held by incumbent Cong. Kulit Alcala.
The Suarez father and son tandem has banked on their years of solid performance to continue their brand of public service as they go campaigning using their formidable political machineries, tapping into almost all sectors of the province to get the votes and consolidate their political power in Quezon.
At the political rally held at the provincial capitol compound a month before the elections, the governor minced no words:
“Ang sabi nila, sira ulo lang daw ang lalaban sa 2nd district, pero narito ako, isang sira ulo na nakikipaglaban para sa kaunlaran ng segunda distrito.”
He claimed that he has as much right to be a resident and run as congressman in the 2nd district as his father grew up and went schooling during his elementary and high school at Lucena West 1 Elem. School and Quezon National High School.
In a video presentation at the campaign rally the elder Suarez showed his early years of deprivation and struggle until he succeeded and was elected as congressman of the 3rd district and holding key positions as House minority floor leader while the young governor touted his accomplishments as the province’ chief executive for 3 terms since July 2010.
The Alcala brothers harped on their desire to effect reforms and transparency in the implementation of huge infrastructure and other development projects in the province but they were hampered by lack of logistics and lack of organized campaign aside from the non-support of the religious bloc Iglesia ni Cristo who endorsed the candidacies of the Suarezes and several of their political allies.
In other political races in the province, in Lucena, Quezon’s capital city, saw the landslide win of incumbent city mayor Rhoderick ‘Dondon’ Alcala with 89,134 votes against his perennial rival former mayor Ramon Talaga Jr. with 37,557. Alcala’s running mate, incumbent vice mayor Philip Castillo also beat board member Ferdinand ‘Bong’ Talabong in the vice mayoral race, with Castillo’s 71,009 votes against the latter, 51,677.
The vice gubernatorial fight was seemingly a ‘no contest’ as the incumbent and reelectionist Samuel Nantes simply overwhelmed his rival, former 4th district board member Narciso Malite, with over 530,857 votes with Nantes’ 645,574 votes against the latter’s 114,717.
In the 1st and 4th districts, both congressional candidates Mark Enverga and reelectionist Rep. Helen Tan ran unopposed. Tan was the first to be proclaimed by the PBOC on Wednesday while Enverga followed the proclamation of the elder Suarez and Nantes on Friday.
In the 3rd district, the new governor-elect’ wife, Aleta, also reclaimed her former post when she easily beat her opponent, Ronnie De Luna with over 100,000 votes margin.
In the 1st district, Alona Obispo made her successful comeback when she emerged as the candidate for board member with the most number of votes, 91,109 followed by Jerry Talaga with 78,536. Incumbent board member Aileen Buan did not make it for placing 4th with 64,842 votes behind Techie Dator’s 65,090 who also failed to return to her former post.
Reelectionist board member Elizabeth Sio topped the 2nd district’s race for board member, with 185,164 votes followed by Candelaria councilor Yna Liwanag’s 146,917 and Romano Talaga with 140,334. Hermilando ‘Eming’ Alcala Jr. failed to reclaim his post as 4th placer while Lucena city councilor Boyet Alejandrino is the tail-ender with 71,597 votes.
The 3rd districts saw the succesful reelection of board member Donaldo ‘Jet’ Suarez with 119,907 votes and newcomer Reynan Arrogancia with 85,933.
Incumbent board member Sonny Ubana led the 4th district board members race with 100,723 votes followed by another reelectionist Rhodora ‘Dhoray’ Tan’s 87,880 and Derick Magbuhos with 79,176. Incumbent board member Raquel Mendoza placed 5th and failed to be reelected.
Quezon province has a total number of registered voters at 1,284,444 but only 1,002,597 actually voted on May 13 elections.
