LOS BAŇOS, Laguna – The Los Baños Science Community Foundation (LBSC), one of the four science communities of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in this sprawling UPLB campus nestled at the foothills of Mt. Makiling, is gearing up for its three-day 11th “SyenSaya: the Los Baños Science Festival” from Aug. 28 to 30 at the UPLB Baker Hall.
Quimby Mari R. Genota of the DOST-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARD) Science and Technology (S&T) Services said on Wednesday the festival highlights the exhibitions and static displays on science and technology (S&T) innovations.
“It is open to the public free of charge from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., especially among science enthusiasts including researchers, students, technology developers, as well as government and private institutions,” she said.
Staged since 2008, the “SyenSaya” showcases during the three-day activities the LBSCF’s 22-member agencies science initiatives and developed technologies, aimed at significantly affecting and improving the lives of the different communities in this Laguna town.
Genota said this year’s festival celebration adopts the theme “Science for the People: Enabling Technologies for Sustainable Development,” in support of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the United Nations General Assembly 2030 Agenda.
“The event also serves as a platform to stir interests among locals, students and the public through science, and technology innovations,” she added.
Among the event highlights are “Wonderama” which features actual and interactive exhibits of technologies in agriculture, aquatic and fisheries, forestry and natural resources, as well as various services for constituents in the different SDGs.
These development goals are No Poverty; Zero Hunger; Good Health and well-being; Quality Education; Gender Equality; Clean Water and Sanitation; Affordable and Clean Energy; Decent Work and Economic Growth; Industry;
Innovation and Infrastructure; Reduced Inequality; Sustainable Cities and Communities; Responsible Consumption and Production; Climate Action; Life Below Water; Life on Land; Peace and Justice Strong Institutions; and Partnerships to achieve the Goal.
The festival also features “Technology Forum” on “Ang Plastik Mo: Isang talakayan patungkol sa kalinisan ng pamayanan (a public discussion on ecological conservation and cleanliness of the community).
She added the forum encourages discussions among local stakeholders and resource speakers who would tackle the compliance to and effects of Municipal Ordinance No. 2014-1316 or the “Expanded Plastic Ordinance of the Municipality of Los Baños,” which prohibits the use of styrofoam, plastics bags, and plastic eating utensils.
Genota said a Science Tourism Project jointly initiated by DOST-Calabarzon and the Department of Tourism (DOT) will be formally introduced during the “SyenSaya.”
The SyenSaya Festival also recognizes outstanding works in research and development through the Research and Development (R&D) Awards in appreciation of the works and contributions of R&D to the community.
It will also recognize noteworthy science outputs by high school students through the Youth Science Awards, its second awarding ceremony for this year. (PR)
