ASUNCION, DDN – Following an armed crash between the 60th Infantry Battalion and a CPP-NPA in Laak, Compostela Valley Province on Tuesday which killed in action a member of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU), parents of three teenage boys approached the authorities claiming that their children have been taken by the said terrorist group to beef up their armed unit.
The 60IB together with the local DSWD dispatch and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) of Laak were assisting the families displaced by the recent terrorist encounter when two parents of three teenage boys approached them to ask for help on their children’s alleged kidnapping.
Emerito Tanoko and his wife Marife said the NPA took their two sons with them about two weeks ago. Their older son Raymond is 18 years old, while the younger one Patrick is only 16. They said they knew their sons were recruited to become NPA armed fighters, but they couldn’t call the authorities’ attention for fear that the NPA would kill them or their sons.

Larry Masalote, on the other hand, said his 17-year-old son Sherwin was also taken by the NPA together with the Tanoko children. He said he fears for what could happen to his son since the latter is somewhat “mentally challenged.” He also couldn’t report his son’s kidnapping out of fear of the NPA’s retaliation.
The local government of Laak is already assisting the families of the kidnapped teenagers.
Erstwhile, the Laak MDRRMO, DSWD, and 60IB were able to immediately provide aid to the affected residents of Barangay Ceboleda and later conducted a community dialogue with them to check on their needs.
Residents expressed relief on the immediate response of the military and the LGU but also said they worry about their livestock and plantations. Authorities, however, advised them to stay in the evacuation centers until the affected portion of the barangay and its immediate vicinity have already been cleared by the military.
At least 40 families affected by the incident are now staying at three evacuation centers of Barangay Ceboleda.
