LUCENA CITY - A single bullet fired by astill unidentified assasin killed a newly elected vice- mayor inside his home in Calmar Subd., Brgy. Kanlurang Mayao, here, on Tuesday night.
Sergio Francisco ‘Popoy’ Emprese, 60, former mayor and newly elected vice- mayor of San Andres, Quezon died while being treated at the hospital, said Quezon police director Col. Audie Madrideo.
Madrideo said Emprese was lying on a wooden bench at the living room of his house when a lone gun man clad in red t- shirt and orange short pants shot him at close range hitting him in the head at around 8:00 p.m.
Probers said the steel gate leading to the victim’s house was unlocked and its main door was open making it easy for the gunman to carry out the killing.
The victim’s sister, Chuchi Emprese who went out of her room after hearing the gunshot told probers that saw the leaving suspect.
“Nang nakita ko siya (suspect), sinabihan n’ya ako na, “Huwag kang lalapit”!, bago siya tuluyang naglakad palayo”, the sister said.
The victim was rushed by his relatives at MMG Hospital in the adjacent village where he died while being treated at 9:54 p.m.
Elements of Quezon Provincial Crime Laboratory Office processed the crime scene and recovered a spent shell and a deformed slug for cal.45 pistol.
Madrideo immediately formed an Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) that will investigate the gruesome killing.
He said they have already identified a person of interest, but refused to elavorate. Before he was elected vice- mayor in the recently concluded election, Emprese served as mayor for 18 years.
However, he was ordered suspended for six months by the Office of the Ombudsman in March or two months beforecthe election over graft charges.
His son, Serson ran for mayor but lost to lawyer Giovanne Lim, the son of Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) president Alfrefo Lim.
Despite winning the vice mayoral post until the time of his assasination, Emprese had not yet assumed office.
