CALAMBA CITY, Laguna – The Philippine Statistics Authority Region 4A (PSA 4A) promotes importance of gender-based statistics through conducting Women and Men (WAM) Statistics Dissemination Forum during the 30thNational Statistics Month (NSM) opening ceremony for Calabarzon.
With the theme, “Data Innovation: Key to a Better Nation,” the NSM 2019 Opening Ceremony enjoined national government agencies and provincial and local government units at Hotel Marciano, Brgy. Real, Calamba City last October 7.
PSA 4A Statistical Specialist Silver Quiatchon who served as Master of Ceremony explained, “Relevant sex-disaggregated information can serve as guide in advocacy work geared towards women’s welfare and advancement in the various sectors of society.”

He also emphasized that information on women related to areas of violence, migration, peace and human rights which have not been given focus in various statistical publications are now being made available through the WAM Statistics.
Senior Statistical Specialist Charity O. Bautista presented the WAM Statistics result of Calabarzon in relation to Population, Labor and Employment, Agriculture, Education, Vital Health and Family Planning, Violence Against Women, Public Life, Overseas Filipinos, Public Order, Safety and Justice, Social Welfare, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
While, National Economic and Development Authority Region 4A (NEDA 4A) Regional Director Luis Banua stressed the importance of the WAM statistics in relation to the fifth SDG, which is to “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.”
He even shared about the initiatives of the Calabarzon Regional Development Council (RDC) on promoting Gender and Development (GAD) including recognizing Best Regional GAD Implementers, developing and conducting GAD trainings, strengthening partnerships and linkages among stakeholders, and continuous advocacy on the use of sex-disaggregated data on planning and policy.Statistical Operations and Coordination Division Chief Benigno F. PSA 4A Statistical Operations and Coordination Division Chief Benigno F. Perido stressed that the goal of the annual celebration is to promote the importance and value of Statistics in governance, policy formulation, planning, decision-making and even Research and Development.
Also, he pointed out that without data and good quality statistics, policy-makers and development planners would be like walking in the dark.
“Statistics will show us whether our policies and programs are technically working and what still needs to be done to achieve sectoral goals under Ambisyon 2040 as well as the SDG 2030,” he explained.
As to the WAM Statistics in Calabarzon, the Chief promised to continue to update its content every year.
“More innovation will be done especially after our Census of Population and Housing in 2020 next year which will give more granular sex-specific demographic statistics so that all gender-issues shall be addressed properly.” (Joy Gabrido/PIA4A)
