CALAMBA CITY, Laguna, Nov. 8—An agriculture student from the Philippine Normal University South Luzon in Lopez, Quezon aced the first national quiz bee on organic agriculture technologies and practices organized by the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI).
Region 4A delegate Joy Tricia Mae Corpuz bested 14 other regional contestants at the pilot run of the Kabataang OA (Organic Agriculture) Quiz Bee held on November 5 in Los Baños, Laguna.
For emerging as the first OA quiz national champion, Corpuz will be receiving a trophy, P25,000 cash prize and certificate of recognition to be conferred in the upcoming National Organic Agriculture Congress that will take place in Alfonso, Cavite on November 12.
Other students who earned victories in the first OA’s competition include Bicol region’s Kabataang OA champion and Bicol University College of Agriculture and Forestry student Allan B. Aycardo who bagged the second place.
Northern Mindanao’s regional champion Ezekiel Gutay from the Ateneo de Cagayan – Xavier University, meanwhile, notched the third spot.

The Kabataang OA Quiz Bee, a brainchild of ATI Region 4A was adopted and implemented by the ATI at the national level to encourage the youth to actively engage in agriculture, particularly organic agriculture.
First launched in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon), the quiz competition, according to ATI Region 4A, not just challenge the understanding of the agriculture students but also address the growing concern on sustaining the agriculture industry.
The training arm of the Department of Agriculture said the quiz competition which was participated by agriculture students from different state universities and colleges nationwide seeks to encourage the youth to pursue agriculture-related courses and spur inspiration among them that farming is a profitable business and a rewarding career.
Aside from the Kabataang OA Quiz Bee, the ATI also held other competitions such as essay writing and poster making contest as a prelude to the National Organic Agriculture Congress, an annual gathering of agriculture stakeholders, farmers, and practitioners, happening on November 12. (PIA4A/ATI4A)
