LUCENA CITY - Members of the Quezon Provincial Legislative Board on Tuesday threatened to take legal action against several electric, telecommunication and water utilities over their alleged negligence.

In a joint hearing of the Committees of Transportation and Communication and Public Works presided by Board Member Reynan Arrogancia, representatives of different public utilities were made to explain regarding their poles implanted along national higways and provincial roads that frequently cause vehicular accidents.

Arrogancia who chairs the Committee on Transportation assailed the continuing presence of the poles used ro support power lines, electrical cable, fiber optic cable and related equipment despite the danger they pose to motorists.

“People have been complaining to us and to the media regarding this problem but your companies seemed to remain deaf and blind”, said the visibly irked Arrogancia.

Laurence Abueg, head of Lucena City Business Center of the Manila Electric Railroad and Light Company (Meralco) explained that among the reasons why their poles remain etected along the highways and roads are their problems on relocation site and financial issues.

He said the company is still in the process of discussion regarding the two issues.

Arrogancia cited an accident involving a Quezonian whose vehicle crashed into a Meralco post without a single reflectorizer but ended up being bullied by the company.

“Despite what happened, the car driver was even threatened by Meralco that he may face charges if he fails to pay the incurred damage of the pole”, Arrogancia lamented.

Board Member Derick Magbuhos who chairs the committee on public works asked the representatives of public utilities to make their respective reports on action taken by next committee hearing.

“Otherwise, we will be compelled to take legal action against your companies”, Magbuhos warned.

Board Member Beth Sio suggested with emphasis that pending the removal of the poles, reflectorizers should be put to help motorists avoid accidents.

Engr. Celestial Flancia who heads the Quezon 4th Engineering District Office said they have been doing their part by building durable roads, maintaining smooth flow of traffic and helping other agencies to avoid accidents.

Flancia said her office keeps on putting signages and reflectorizers along highways and closely coordinating with the public utilities especially during times of vehicular accidents involving their poles.
