CALAMBA CITY, Laguna – The Los Baños Gender and Development (LB-GAD) Office echoes inclusivity in their observance of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women and their Children.
“This year we want something new. Since the theme of the observance is "VAW Free Community Starts with Me," we want the whole LB community to take part in this nationwide advocacy,” GAD Officer Karen Lagat-Mercado told Philippine Information Agency Calabarzon.
In this year’s observance, they included the community of LB composed of the barangays, the members of the Los Banos Science Community Foundation Inc. (LBFCSI), the cooperatives, the schools, the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Non-Government Organizations (NGO).
The GAD Officer said the town had been observing the 18 day campaign for three years now.
On their first year, they targeted the husbands of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) members whereas they launched the TATAK LB (Tatay Ayaw sa Karahasan).
“Last year naman we encouraged the participation of youth, especially the young men, in our VAW activity,” she added, explained.

Last November 25, the Local Government of Los Baños led the Advocacy Walk themed, “Hakbang tungo sa Kaligtasan ni JUANA: A Walk to End VAW,” which enjoined the different local government offices, business establishments, and schools, among others, of the locality. It was followed by the opening of a VAW exhibit.
The VAW Exhibit showcases garments that represent women and children who have different stories of abuses and violent experiences. The exhibit also conveys a message that being victim of violence and abuses have nothing to do with what one wears.
Moreover, LB-GAD likewise encouraged the involvement of the youth through their very first Cine Juana Digital Film-Making for the Junior and Senior High Schools of Los Baños.
“The Cine Juana LB Digital Film-Making Contest was patterned to PCW Cine Juana Contest. So ni-localize lang namin and the mechanics are the same,” Mercado explained.
LB-GAD is bringing its VAW Information Drive to various offices, barangays, and business establishments around Los Baños from November 25 until December 12, 2019, to distribute flyers and hold lectures about the laws that protect women against all kinds of violence.
The town’s observance will culminate through a Forum on Republic Act 11313, also known as Safe Spaces Act or Bawal ang Bastos Act; RA 9262, known as Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children; and the Role of Barangay in ending VAW this coming December 10. (Joy Gabrido/PIA4A)
