LUCENA CITY - Who would have thought that wastewater could be further exploited by converting it into a nutrient-rich fertilizer?

This is what Dr. Michael Angelo Promentilla proved, a specialist winner recently at the 2019 Newton Prize Country Award, an award given to an individual, group or institution that contributes to a scientific project that helps waste management, health, food, security and more.

Promoting a national name, Promentilla presented his study with the De La Salle Science Research Team, titled “Water-energy-nutrient Nexus in the Cities of the future”, where the liquid comes from sewage and septage water will be another good fertilizer.

It has been found that such wastewater contains nitrogen and phosphorus, both nutrients that can be fertilized in plants and farms. Today the country is also importing phosphates to fertilizers.

In this regard, Councilor Sunshine Abcede-Llaga recently advanced to the city council a resolution recognizing the doctor and his invention, which was immediately passed by other council members under Vice Mayor Philip Castillo.

According to Llaga, although Promentilla was not a Lucenian, some schools in the city added knowledge and skills to it when he studied here.

It is also a great contribution because it has been so honored that it should only be given recognition.

The aforementioned study will be helpful to farmers who also serve the city of Lucena. They will have alternative fertilizers available to their crops.

Also, it helps the environment by eliminating polluted fluids that are considered water pollution.

Promentilla is currently a professor in DLSU’s Chemical Engineering course. In 2013, he was recognized as one of the country’s Outstanding Young Scientists by the highest scientific advisory body, the National Academy of Science and Technology.
