CALAMBA CITY, Laguna -The municipality of Lobo in Batangas Province was chosen for the second time as one of the Top 5 Coastal Communities out of the 13 regional winners across the country vying for the “Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan” for 2019.

Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan (MMK) Program is one of the banner programs of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) which aims to recognize outstanding initiatives and contribution of coastal municipalities/cities to sustainable fisheries management.

BFAR Central Office chief Agriculturist and National Technical Search Committee (NTSC) member Sandra Victoria Arcamo said during the field validation that Lobo is competing against the municipalities of Dingalan, Aurora; Masbate City, Masbate; Bacolod, Lanao del Norte; and Cagwait, Surigao del Sur.

“Announcement of winners for the 2019 National MMK Search will be on the first week of April 2020,” Arcamo added.

In store for the winners are fishery livelihood projects worth P30M for the national winner while the 1st and 2nd placers will each receive P20M and P10M respectively.

After emerging as the regional winner in the 2019 Regional Search for the Most Outstanding Coastal Community in CALABARZON Region, the municipality was nominated as the regional entry in the national level.

The NTSC carefully evaluated the documents submitted on municipal fisheries profile of the town of Lobo, the summary of its accomplishments, and the discussion of major points based on MMK criteria.

On Feb 3-27 2020, the NTSC members led by Arcamo conducted field validation as part of the evaluation process. Program/project sites were visited and representatives of peoples’ organizations, bantay-dagat network, and recipients of the municipality’s livelihood interventions were interviewed.

The evaluation committee was assisted by the staff from the Municipal Agriculture Office, BFAR 4A Regional Office and the Provincial Fisheries Office in Batangas. (CPG, PIA 4A with reports from BFAR CALABARZON0
