As a response to the provision of 'Enhanced Community Quarantine' throughout Luzon, the Department of Education (DepEd) has launched an online education platform for public teachers.
The online platform that released the department was called "DepEd Commons". This is to support a nearly one-month class suspension because of the threat of Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).
“Today, the first day of the enhanced community quarantine of Luzon and the 8th day of class suspensions from the time that Metro Manila was placed under community quarantine, we are silently launching the DepEd Commons,” the DepEd Undersecretary said for the Alain Pascua Administration.
Pascua added that the online platform has yet to be contacted but that it will have to remove students from continuing their lessons.
“DepEd Commons is not complete nor perfect. It still has many limitations: contents are not yet that many, evaluation and ranking have not yet been included, separate channels for teachers, parents, students, and officials have not yet been established – but the times calls for its introduction,” Pascua said.
The said online platform will enable public teachers to support teaching in remote areas through online assessment materials and Open Educational Resources (OERs). It can be accessed at https://commons.deped.gov.ph
“We acknowledge the reality of the situation wherein DepEd Commons and its OERs are not accessible to all teachers and learners,” the agency said.
According to DepEd, teachers can use paper-based homework for students who do not teach in internet cafes and ensure their safety.
Classes will be suspended throughout Luzon from March 15 to April 14 because of the Enhanced Community Quarantine implemented to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Meanwhile, DepEd spokesperson June Arvin Gudoy said that despite the COVID-19 threat, the DepEd continued skeletal workforce, along with the DepEd Task Force COVID-19 to maintain work in the Central Office.
Prsonnel from DepEd disinfect constantly, process documents and maybe a "dispatcher" who takes care of incoming and outgoing employees.
