RIZAL, Philippines – Vice Mayor Jose ‘Jolet’ delos Santos of the municipality of Jala-jala in this province died Tuesday (March 31), days after he was tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Delos Santos’ son Jom on his Facebook post confirmed the sad news.

He said his father was diagnosed with the disease on March 25.

“Wala pong salita ang katumbas kung gaano kasakit at kahirap na hinde siya makita hanggang sa mga huling sandali ng kanyang buhay, [No words can parallel the pain of not seeing him in the last moment of his life,]” the young Delos Santos said.

“Ito po ay sa kadahilananang personal niyang hiling na ayaw nyang malagay ang kanyang pamilya sa panganib, [His reason was because he didn’t want to put his family at risk],” he added.

Since his diagnosis, the local official went on isolation after showing symptoms of COVID-19.

“Bagamat gusto po natin syang makasama sa panahong ito, mas gugustuhin po ng Papa na ‘wag muna tayo magtipon-tipon kung maaari, palipasin po muna natin ang crisis na ito, dahil sigurado po ako ayaw niya tayo malagay sa hindi magandang kalusugan,” Jom said citing his father’s call regarding the current outbreak.

[In as much as we want to be with him at this trying time, my father would be pleased if we refrain from any gathering and let this crisis pass because I am sure he didn’t want our health to be compromised.]

Jolet Delos Santos also served as the town’s mayor from 1994 to 2004 and he was serving his second term as vice mayor prior to his death.

Based on the latest report of the Department of Health (DOH), Rizal province has a total of

“Maraming salamat po sa inyong pakikiramay. Napakasakit po sa aming buong pamilya ang biglaang pagkawala ng Ama ng ating bayan,” he added. (UNTV)
