CALABARZON, Philippines - Progressive groups from all over Southern Tagalog led by BAYAN ST united today, June 12, along Pala-pala, Dasmariñas; Antipolo, Rizal; and Balibago, Laguna to assert against the executive approval of the AntiTerror Bill and to press for the ouster of the Duterte regime that suppresses the nation’s genuine independence from the control of foreign imperialists, US and China.
The groups assembled and positioned in different areas around Pala-pala Crossing at 3:45 p.m. By 4:00p.m., the program started after being signaled by the reveal of the program streamer. Afterward, a symbolic cultural presentation was performed depicting mourning mothers grieving the death of Philippine independence and democracy. A similar protest was held at Amar, Balibago, Laguna. In the morning, the group held a lightning rally at Binakayan Public Market, Kawit, Cavite near the Aguinaldo Shrine.
Leaders from different progressive groups of various marginalized sectors each spoke about the government’s attack on and repression of the civil and political rights of the people from the sectors they represent during the government imposed militarized lockdown.
They comprehensively discussed and condemned how the Duterte’s fascist regime which only serves and protects the interests of the ruling class and the imperialist US and China - have been depriving them of fundamental human rights including the right to dissent.
We condemn in the strongest terms the anti-democratic Anti-Terror Bill patterned after USA’s Counter-insurgency, which questions constitutionality and serves as a weapon by the government against its own people to silence activism. We will defy with all our might the prevailing reign of state terror which claimed many lives launched a war against the poor and the voices of dissent that resulted in the massive number of human rights abuses in the region as what happened to Calaca 6. Duterte’s signature on the anti-Terror Bill may be the last nail to seal the coffin, but Southern Tagalog people will not go down without a fight to save the rights and democracy which this bill aims to annihilate,” said Casey Cruz, spokesperson of BAYAN ST.
Under Duterte’s regime, countless cases of human rights abuse in the form of illegal arrests, harassment, and killings have been recorded in the Southern Tagalog region. This repression is existent even before the “draconian” Anti-Terror Bill was authorized, leading them to the dignified stance to #JunkTerrorBillNow. The bill was widely proter journalists, business groups, and known personalities.
“We will not cower in fear of a traitor and human rights assailant and an imperialist lapdog that is Duterte, he must face the consequences of the crimes he committed against the people. Expect more uproar coming his way,” added Cruz.
Moreover, they insisted that the independence the Philippines has been celebrating for over a century is fake; asserting that foreign imperialist countries such as the US and China have been in control of the country’s economy, politics, and military. They proclaimed that Duterte’s policies such as the Build, Build, Build and Train Law are all efforts to cater to the interests of the few and of these imperialist countries.
“All these social conditions under the US-China-Duterte regime are more noticeably manifested in how the gove responded to the COVID-19 health crisis. Instead of aggressive mass testing, contact tracing, and health ser announcements, we are met with tyrannical and despotic moves to further the agenda of neoliberal agenda of in countries.” ended Cruz.
The protest ended with a solemn singing of the piece, “Bayan Ko”, as the crowd commemorates the struggle for genuine independence and democracy.
