CALAMBA CITY, Laguna - About 4,310 rice and corn farmers from the province of Quezon will benefit from several sacks of certified inbred rice seeds, fertilizers, and agricultural equipment recently handed over by the Department Agriculture (DA) CALABARZON to the local governments (LGU) of Tagkawayan and Buenavista.

Rolando P. Cuasay, Agricultural Program Coordinating Officer (APCO) for Quezon said the 291 bags of certified inbred rice seeds and 3,584 bags of urea allocated to the Municipal Agriculture Office of Tagakawayan is part of the implementation of the Rice Resiliency Project (RRP) of the DA.

According to Cuasay, the project aims to increase and boost the productivity and income of rice farmers during this wet-season cropping.

"The 291 bags of certified inbred seeds we turned-over June 30 to the Tagkawayan LGU were composed of: 68 bags of RC 216; 87 bags of RC 18; 45 bags of RC 218; and 91 bags of RC 160 rice varieties," he added.

Tagkawayan OIC Municipal Agriculturist Juanito S. Panganiban said the distribution of certified inbred rice seeds and urea bags will support a total of 1,484 and 2,000 rice farmers, respectively.

"Certified inbred rice seeds and urea are essential inputs in ensuring greater productivity in rice farming. We would like to thank DA for these inputs, which will surely help our farmers achieve their optimum production level," Mr. Panganiban said.

Cuasay shared the DA CALABARZON's distribution of rice varieties and fertilizers is intended to improve productivity and achieve food adequacy in the region.

"Farmers may receive additional free urea fertilizers by sending the original receipt of the sales invoice of their purchase in order to avail the buy 2 take 2 project scheme," Cuasay concluded.

On the other hand, through its Corn Program, DA Region IV-CALABARZON turned over agricultural equipment to the Buenavista LGU in support of the 826 corn farmer-beneficiaries improve their farm productivity.

The first batch of machinery delivered includes a 25-kilovolt amperes silent-type generator for the corn mill, 50 horsepower Ford tractor, a mobile grain dryer, and a hammer mill.

Regional Corn Program Coordinator Avelita M. Rosales said these farm machinery would help reduce their operational costs, achieve plentiful harvests, and gain higher income substantially.

Aside from the agri equipment, farm inputs such as 50 sacks of yellow hybrid corn seeds and 50 packs of white hybrid corn seeds were also handed over.

Buenavista Vice Mayor Alvin Ray U. Rivera expressed gratitude and support.

“These interventions would bring long-term and sustainable benefits for our corn farmers. We are glad to be able to help ensure food security by helping our farmers to boost their productivity and reduce postharvest losses with this machinery, particularly in these tough times, with the constant assistance of DA through its Corn Program,” Rivera said.

The second batch of agricultural equipment to be turned-over includes a moisture meter, a vacuum pack sealer, a mechanical corn sheller, and a corn mill. (CPGonzaga, PIA-4A with reports from DA-RFO IVA, RAFIS)
