BATANGAS CITY - Planting vegetables is being promoted in a Barangay Poblacion 10 known as the 'Buhay Gulay Project' during this time of the pandemic.
The Barangay Poblacion 10 initiative led by Brgy. Captain Kevin Gutierrez is a form of non-traditional urban gardening where even large cropland can grow a variety of vegetables using large bottles, egg trays, and broken buckets.
With the assistance of the Office of the City Veterinary and Agricultural Services (OCVAS), their residents were provided with planting and were taught proper planting.
Gutierrez said that he could easily convince his constituents to plant, especially when there was a lockdown because, in addition to avoiding costs, they are sure to eat healthier.
“Nagsilbing inspirasyon naming ang mga lokal na opisyal tulad nina Mayor Beverley Dimacuha at Councilor Alyssa Cruz dahilan sa pagsusulong nila ng greening programs sa mga urban areas at maging sa kanilang sariling pamilya ay itinuturo at nagsisilbing bonding moments ang pagtatanim at pag-aalaga nito," Gutierrez said.
The Office of the City of Veterinary and Agricultural Services (OCVAS) is, therefore, providing training on proper implantation.
The project began in May and some of it is beginning to take full advantage of that. Some of the planted seeds include okra, legumes, pechay, mustard, and ginger.
Meanwhile, Gutierrez encouraged other barangays in Poblacion to practice urban gardening not only as a food source but also as a good way to deal with the crisis during the COVID19 pandemic. (with a report from PIO BATANGAS CITY)
