Para que estamos en poder?
Duterte Fist by nonbinary Redbubble

You must be kidding, Caloy, or are you asking for the moon? What are we in power for? - Sen. Jose Avelino once said that in 1949.

The famous President of the Senate, Jose Avelino, one of the most corrupt officials in the late 1940s in the administration of then-President Elpidio Quirino 's quotation, "What are we in power for?" originally stated in Spanish as "Para que estamos en poder?" again illustrates one thing: a typical power-hungry politician out of touch with reality. It's going to be a pandemic. 71 years later, it's still the norm of politics.

The character development of the 70 people who voted not to grant the ABS-CBN franchise, the legislators who passed the Anti-Terror Law, and the "you know who" abuse their powers.

This must be the most uncultured government official in the history of the Philippines. Thinking that you can use your authority as a government official to attack any helpless citizen is the height of idiocy and stupidness. Waste of votes. Waste of the seat of the government. The shame of all of you and the shame of the Senate if nothing is done about it.

But wasn’t Sec. Avelino misquoted? Some people said his statement was supposed to mean the opposite - what are we in power for if we cannot help the Filipinos in need. But yes, I agree that anything wrong related to this administration goes scot-free

This is life in our politics and governance, as we here in the Philippines are in a presidential form of government modeled on that of the United States of America that gives full executive powers to the presidency that could, sadly, be used to manipulate and undermine our democratic institutions, particularly the media or at least some of them.

What happened to denied ABSCBN Franchise Renewal, and convicted Maria Ressa, is pure abuse of executive power. It was full of politics. It was no rule of law, but it was a twist of the law to exact vengeance and oppression.

It is up to now to ABS-CBN to bring before the Court a petition for certiorari alleging serious abuse of discretion by the decision of the Committee. That's what I can only say about it in the meantime.

I am sad that there are people who are happy about the non-renewal of the ABS-CBN franchise, as well as the loss of livelihood of its employees. And I deplore it as it is inhuman and immoral and I lament the fact that why they are doing so?

This is not the time to remain silent. But some government officials, like Senator Bong Go, are sending an NBI subpoena to their bashers.

The defendants are not informed that Senator Bong Go is the complainant. Nor are they informed which of their social media posts is subject to the subpoena. They 're calling it harassment.

Why is there so much focus on silencing the critics? It is pathetic. This Anti-Terror Law is simply about silencing government critics.

What would be the benefit or earnings they could make in doing so? I submit that there is none. History will judge them, perhaps, harshly, and they will have to endure it when the time comes, under the pain of suffering.

Abuse of power is a nebulous thing. Presidential powers are fairly broad. The constitutional definition of "high crimes and misdemeanors" would suggest that for political purposes you can vote for impeaching but the Senate jury will have higher and different standards.
