BATANGAS CITY - The Batangas City's Schools Division Office (SDO) launched the "Gulayan Program: Paaralan at Tahanan Magkatuwang, mga Kawani ng SDO ang Sandigan," with a commitment to providing the food that is the students' main necessity during the pandemic.

The launch was conducted via the SDO Batangas City Virtual Learning Platform's face-to-face page, August 17.

According to Dr. Victoria Fababier, Chief of the Schools Governance and Operations Division, the program is in accordance with Dep Ed Memorandum No. 53 Series 2020 entitled Joint Implementing Guidelines on the 2020 Brigada Eskwela / Oplan Balik Eskwela relative to the COVID19 situation.

It is also anchored in one of the core values of Dep Ed-being environmentally friendly and supporting the Eto Batangueño Disiplinado program of Mayor Beverley Rose Dimacuha.

Dep Ed Superintendent Dr. Zaldy Bolanos stressed that the said program aims at solving the issue of malnutrition and encouraging young people's cultivation and consumption of vegetables.

He encouraged the use of a home yard of vacant lots.

“Bukod sa gaganda ang kapaligiran, makakatulong pa sa kalikasan” Bolanos said.

Mayor Dimacuha said in his message that the pandemic has been mandated from the start he has ordered OCVAS to distribute vegetable seeds to ensure people don't go hungry.

“Sa programa ng Dep Ed na gulayan sa tahanan, matuturuan natin ang ating mga mag-aaral ng kahalagahan ng pagtatanim ng gulay sa kanilang sariling bakuran at bukod sa tulong sa kalusugan at kabuhayan na maidudulot nito sa pamilya ng ating mga mag-aaral, matuturuan din ng kasipagan, tiyaga at pagkamalikhain ang ating mga mag-aaral”, Mayor said.

The Assistant Superintendent of the Schools Division (ASDS) Dr. Jeopi Falqueza highlighted the saying “kapag may itinanim, may aanihin” is true.

With the support of the vegetable program, he said, there will be enough food for every family and even the community.

He said it will also serve as a time of parents bonding with their children.

City veterinarian Dr. Macario Hornilla, on the other hand, advised that the aforementioned program is a good step towards educating young people about the importance of planting. He said vegetable gardening will help to maintain every family's livelihood.

The SDO Batangas City thanked Dep Ed Mayor Beverley Dimacuha and Congressman Marvey Marino for their assistance.

Albert Serquiña, OCVAS Agricultural Technologist shared various knowledge about the organic fertilizer types and uses.

SDO Personnel, School Heads, DRRM Coordinators, SSG / SPG Advisers, YES O Advisers, SSG, and SPG Presidents and YES O Presidents in the town attended the virtual launch and training.
