MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Education (DepEd) postponed the class opening for the academic year 2020-2021 days before the start of classes, from August 24 to October 5, 2020.
On Friday, August 14, 2020, Department of Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones announced in a virtual briefing that she received a memorandum from the Office of the President.
“As per the memorandum, the President has approved the recommendation of DepEd. Thus, we will implement such a decision to defer school opening to October 5 pursuant to Republic Act (RA) No. 11480,” said Briones.
According to Briones, The DepEd will use the deferment to provide relief to the logistical limitations in the areas placed under MECQ in Metro Manila and the provinces of Cavite, Bulacan, Laguna, and Rizal.
This breaking news gave a big relief to the students and teachers nationwide.
In an online interview with Ms. Editha B. Huelva, Principal III of Dalahican Elementary school she was a bit surprised about yesterday’s breaking news but also grateful because it gave them more time to prepare for the materials needed for the class opening.
“I believe that the higher authorities are knowledgeable about their action. Their decision will help the teachers, parents, learners, and the whole Department of Education.” She added.
The newly signed law, RA 11480 gives the president the power to move the class opening nationwide due to calamity or in times of emergency.
