Just like how K-pop fandom religiously supports their ‘biases’ from streaming 24/7, buying merch and attending concerts, I was shocked when I opened my twitter account and the most trending hashtag is #CancelKorea.
I am also a K-pop fan but I do love more the Philippines even though we have ineffective leaders and a problematic system. But I will not dump someone or something that I love without doing my research and critically analyzing what was the root of the problem and how will I react.
So, I search thoroughly and found out that this started when Bella Porch, a known Tiktok artist was bashed due to her tattoo on her arm which is the rising sun flag. In South Korea, the rising flag is an offensive flag because it became a symbol of the Japanese crimes and oppression to them.
Stereotyping at its finest, all of the characteristics of the Filipinos were commented harshly and the warzone was set to the keyboard warriors of both parties. Yes, although they are offended, they don’t have the right to mock and belittle us but I can’t seem to understand why some people would do the same (stereotyping) just to get back at them in the first place.
Moving on, this war worsen were some South Korean YouTubers started to create videos from stomping and tearing the Philippines flag. I don’t know if this is really intended or just a tactic for them to gain more views but some videos from other known South Korean personalities are apologizing for the behavior of their other citizen. This is why we don’t have to generalize that the Koreans are all toxic which leads to creating racism.
Instead of creating a war from the other countries, why don’t face our battle first? We have to combat with COVID-19 wherein as our debt rises the cases and deaths also rise, the government who oppresses the media, education system where many will be left behind.
Behind the scene of the #CancelKorea, there are still problems and issues that we are facing and going to face, to begin with. So before campaigning or joining a campaign, think twice if it will do good or will harm generally not just because it is the trend.
