CALAMBA CITY, Laguna - A total of 35 corn farmers from this city underwent the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI)-Calabarzon's “Barangay Level Corn-Based Farming System” training, in coordination with the City Agriculture Office.
Out of the total corn farmer participants from barangays Palo Alto, Mayapa, Burol, and Mapagong, 35 attended the face to face training held October 3-4, 2020 while three additional farmers participated through a virtual platform.
The training centered on discussions about corn based farming systems, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), business enterprises in corn farming and forming farmers’ organizations and marketing networks.
One of the participants, Simeon Peria who is new to the corn farmers’ group shared that he is grateful to be a part of the training.
“Salamat din at napasyal sila sa barangay namin upang kami ay mabiyayaan ng kaalaman sa pagmamaisan, record-keeping at marketing. Nabiyayaan pa kami ng corn seeds at abono, na hindi namin inaasahan,” he says.
(We thanked them for visiting our barangay to provide us with information on corn farming, record-keeping and marketing and unexpectedly, gave us corn seeds and fertilizers.)
After the training, the ATI distributed one bag of yellow corn seeds and one sack of Urea as well as BIO-N from UPLB BIOTECH to each of the participant. (PIA-Laguna with report from Daynon Kristoff Imperial, ATI-CALABARZON)
