Biñan launches free WiFi for public schools

BIÑAN CITY, Laguna – Some 10,000 learners here will have free internet access as the city government launched the Biñan City Wifi, in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd)

The Biñan City Wifi will be installed in the city’s 24 barangays in an effort to provide inclusive and strong wifi connection to Biñanenses.

[Many of our neighbors cannot afford to have wifi connection in their homes [so] this is a huge help for the children to continue their studies.]

[This free wifi project will be a big deal, especially for ordinary citizens. Teachers can now [go to school] if there is no wifi in their homes [and] all schools in Binan can serve as learning hubs.]

Connected city
Biñan City Wi-Fi promises faster internet connection, thanks to the 15 access points installed in Southville 5-A.

Kaya kung may wifi, lahat ng group chat nila for instruction, magagamit niya ang kanyang cellphone,” Division Schools Superintendent Edna Agustin said, emphasizing that the project will help students access their learning materials and interact with classmates and teachers.

[Even if the children use modular [learning], they still have group chats for instruction. If there is wifi, they can use their cellphones in their group chats.]

Teacher’s day gift
Aside from marking DepEd’s shift to blended learning, the launching of the Biñan Free Wifi coincided with World Teacher’s Day, which celebrates the contributions of educators.

[This is a very historic day for the Department of Education because of our teachers’ sacrifices to help the children continue their education.]

Despite the challenges of the new curriculum, Dimaguila saw this as an opportunity for tech-savvy teachers to share their ideas and improve their teaching methods.

“With this project naniniwala akong kung anong klase ng edukasyon ang kaya kong ibigay sa aking mga anak, that is also the kind of education na gusto naming ibigay sa mga public school student,” Dimaguila continues.

[With this project, I believe that the kind of education I can give to my children, that is also the kind of education we want to provide to public school students.]

The local chief executive assured the education department and its stakeholders that his office is open to address any problem that may arise in the conduct of online classes. (PB)
