CALAMBA CITY, Laguna - The Department of Agriculture (DA) is set to turn-over a P5.7M-worth of Solar-Powered Irrigation System (SPIS) to the Calumpang Corn Growers' Association in Brgy. Calumpang, Tayabas City, Quezon, this September 2020.
This intervention will significantly help increase the farm productivity and income of Tayabas corn farmers as it will allow them to easily water their farmlands and save on fuel costs.
SPIS is designed to help farmers in remote areas irrigate their farmlands, which will eventually increase their production during the dry months. Such infrastructure is sustainable and has a diesel-free irrigation system that can irrigate rice and other high-value crops throughout the year, thus ensuring a boost in productivity and income.
The farmers' group also received a P3.495-million mobile dryer from the regional office.
In corn farming, it is understood that the process of drying or removing excess moisture for safe storage is another way of increasing farmers’ income by reducing quantity and quality losses. (PIA-4A/DA-RFO IVA, RAFIS)
