CALAMBA, Laguna - On Sunday, November 1st, due to heavy rainfall caused by Super Typhoon Rolly, the water overflowed from Laguna de Bay or Laguna Lake. Strong waves were seen in the lake because of the wind. The water level reached 6 feet. As a result, an estimated 763 families or nearly 3,000 people have been displaced.
As many as 800 people had to be evacuated to the evacuation center in Barangay Palingon in Taguig, it was difficult for the authorities to enforce physical distancing, particularly because coronary virus disease is still present.
“Lahat ng nasa evacuation po, may face mask po kaso siyempre, ang hirap pa rin pong pagsabihan lahat ng tao. Talagang hahabaan pa natin pasensya natin,” official of the barangay said.
Laguna Lake is six feet high in the Calamba, Laguna area. In Los Baños, on the other hand, the depth of the lake has exceeded 13 feet because a strong wind driven by the typhoon pushed the water in the lake from part of Angono, Rizal to there.
According to Laguna Governor Emil Hernandez of the Laguna Lake Development Authority Environmental Regulations Department, the maximum critical water level of the lake is 12.50 meters and when it is exceeded, the surrounding communities will be flooded.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration, typhoon Rolly weakened as it headed toward the West Philippine Sea. It is expected to be released in the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Tuesday, November 3.
After the ravages of typhoon Rolly, the strong waves in Laguna Lake stopped. There are also small boats sailing and fishing. Some residents, on the other hand, flocked to the Aplaya Baywalk this morning to buy fresh fish and exercise.
