SAN PABLO CITY, Laguna - A request from the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (FARMC) to the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) to create the Red Tilapia Sanctuary in Sampaloc Lake was approved by the City Council last Nov. 19, Res. 670 s.2020.
Based on the resolution, the LLDA approved the proposed establishment of a fish sanctuary on a small portion of the lake near the Community Fish Landing Center based on certain rules.
The main purpose of the fish sanctuary should be to protect and naturally increase the indigenous fish species in Sampalok Lake.
The placement of aquaculture structures or enclosures to allow fish to move freely towards feeding and breeding grounds will not be allowed.
There is also a signboard or reminder to the public that "no feeding of fish" in the designated fish sanctuary and fishing is also prohibited here.
According to the LLDA, the Yankaw Fish Garden Sanctuary Project in Calamba City can also serve as a model or basis as a successful environment-friendly method for building a fish sanctuary.
Before starting the project, it is also necessary to first coordinate with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), LLDA and other fishery experts/researchers for the necessary technical assistance.
