LUCENA CITY - According to Gajo, most of the victims of the typhoon were vegetable plants in Tiaong, Pagbilao and Lucena City. The value of the damaged vegetable crops was P180,112,512.50, while 2,083 farmers were affected by typhoon. More than P488 million is destroyed in 'Agriculture & Fisheries' in the cities of Quezon province due to the typhoon 'Quinta,' Provincial Agriculture Roberto Gajo recently reported at the meeting of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC).
In addition, about 8,219 farmers were also affected due to the destruction of their fruit bearing trees in the 5,439 hectares of plantations in the towns of San Narciso, Sariaya and Catanauan. The amount of fruit crops damaged by the typhoon in the said towns reached P143,293,774.60.
In total, 28,403.06 hectares of rice fields, corn, vegetables, fruit-bearing trees and coconuts were damaged by typhoon “Quinta” in Quezon Province.
Meanwhile, 20,236 fishermen were also affected by the typhoon, according to a report by the provincial agriculture office.
In this regard, the provincial government announced assistance to the victims of the typhoon such as farmers and even the families whose homes were damaged.
PDRRMO Chief Melchor Avenilla said the provincial government will assist the victims of the typhoon in Quezon province.
“Awtomatiko po na tutulong ang ating pamahalaang panlalawigan sa pangunguna ng ating Gobernador Danilo Suarez sa mga magsasaka at mga pamilyang naapektuhan ng bagyo sa pamamagitan ng pagbibigay ng mga libreng pananim, pagbibigay ng mga ayuda at relief goods at iba pa,” Avenilla said.
The Sangguniang Panlalawigan has also declared the province of Quezon “Under State of Calamity” due to the severe damage caused by the typhoon to crops and households in some towns.
Meanwhile, in a Facebook post of Humanity & Inclusion Philippines and Indonesia - PIN they said their teams went to assess the needs of San Narciso municipality in Quezon province.
One of the areas that is hardest hit is Barangay Busok-Busokan, a low-lying rural barangay surrounded by a river and a mountain. During typhoons, the barangay sits dangerously as a catch basin for water coming from the river and nearby mountains. The barangay is currently recovering from Typhoon Quinta when Typhoon Rolly arrived barely a quarter after, and damaged their homes and livelihood.
There is an urgent need to support families affected by Typhoon Rolly, as the extent of damages brought compounding issues spanning from basic needs to shelter, livelihood, security, health, WASH, psychosocial interventions, and access to information.
