IMUS, Cavite - The provincial government of Cavite has canceled its award of a $10-billion airport deal south of the capital, local project proponent MacroAsia Corp.
Gov. Jonvic Remulla of Cavite said on his Facebook that the province has canceled its negotiations with the consortium of China Communications Construction Co. Ltd. (CCCC) and Lucio Tan’s MacroAsia Corp. for the redevelopment of the Sangley Airport into an international gateway.
The CCCC and MacroAsia in 2019 won the auction to partner with the Cavite provincial government to upgrade the Sangley airport.
CCCC was among the Chinese firms blacklisted by the United States in August for their roles in constructing and militarizing artificial South China Sea islands.
Remulla said the recommendation was made “due to various deficiencies of the submission of requirements to conclude the Joint Venture Agreement for the Sangley Point International Airport [SPIA].”
“The recommendation was accepted and approved by my office dated January 26, 2021,” he said.
MoreoveÅ•, the lawmaker added that “While it does cancel the negotiations, the project will restart and hopefully have a successful negotiation with any qualified partner by October 2021."
