LUCENA CITY - Department of Agriculture Secretary William Dar recently visited the city of Lucena. This visit has been made by Sec. Dar to lead the unloading of 13 live pig trucks on board Vivian Marian Queen's M/V ship.
An estimated 1,350 pigs from General Santos City will be taken to various markets in Manila as an addition to the meat supply here.
Mayor Roderick “Dondon” Alcala, Governor Danilo Suarez, and several department heads welcomed the secretary's arrival.
Lucena Mayor Dondon Alcala and Governor Danny Suarez also conveyed some of the issues and requests of those belonging to the agricultural sector in Lucena and Quezon province.
This meeting of the said officer with the secretary is to find out from what the province of Quezon and even the city of Lucena needs when it comes to the issue of pork shortage in Manila.
And this is also the reason why there are almost no pigs available in its neighboring provinces due to the disease that hit it African Swine Flu.
That is why the national government is already taking this kind of initiative and taking pigs to other provinces just to meet the shortage of its supply and also to lower the price of such meat.
Pigs affected by ASF usually manifest high fever, distinct reddish areas on the skin of the neck, chest, and extremities, and bleeding of internal organs that could lead to death within two to 10 days.
