LOS BAÑOS, Laguna - As part of its extension project, the Laguna State Polytechnic’s (LSPU) collaborated with DOST-CALABARZON, DepEd Schools Division Office of San Pablo City, and Ideation Design and Development Laboratory (IDD Lab) for the staging of the RoboTeach Olympics 2021 last January 29, 2021 at the Crecencia Drusila Lopez Senior High School.

The RoboTeach Olympics 2021 aimed to prepare and equip the 25 teachers from various schools in the city of San Pablo with the knowledge and experience of robotics technology.

DOST-CALABARZON officer-in-charge Regional Director Ms. Emelita P. Bagsit in her inspirational message, emphasized that designing, developing, and prototyping robots can be done through the IDD Laboratory. She also encouraged everyone to further pursue and learn more about robotics and technology in general.

“Now that we have the learnings, the knowledge, the important challenge is how to share this knowledge to our students,” Bagsit said.

Meanwhile, Prof. Angela Reginaldo, Director of the LSPU Extension and Training Services, echoed Ms. Bagsit’s sentiments on knowledge sharing which according to her, the event caters not only to teachers but to their students as well.

“Iba na po talaga ang landas na tinatahak ng edukasyon ngayon,” she added, “We give our services for free but in return, i-extend po natin kung ano ang natutunan natin dito, doon [to students].”

Dr. Edilberto Andal, IDD General Operations Manager, mentioned that the activity was originally set last April 2020 was delayed because of the pandemic. However, he also commented that it is because of the pandemic that people are led to explore the possibilities of technology.

“Ang objective po nito ay makapag-conduct ng training sa basic programming and product assembly para makapag-provide ng tech assistance sa DepEd,” Dr. Andal shared.

Aside from this, Dr. Andal mentioned that the activity aims to produce instructional materials on robotics and to provide ample training for students. “It is you who will be the catalyst, it is you who will ignite,” he added, “Education is a continuous process.”

The RoboTeach Olympics was divided into two main competitions, the Line Tracing and the ZumoBot Competition, and special awards were handed to winners for the Best Robot Design, People’s Choice Award, and the Best Presenter.

Before the contest proper, the 25 contestants presented their robots and the materials used in creating them like recycled materials ranging from recycled bottles, bottle caps, food packagings, to patched illustration boards.
