CALAMBA CITY -The CALABARZON Department of Agriculture recently distributed pigs to pig farmers affected by African Swine Fever (ASF) in two towns in Batangas province.
In order to revive and revitalize the piggery industry in the region, 60 sentinel pigs totaling P480,000 were donated to 12 beneficiaries, seven (7) from Cuenca and five (5) from Nasugbu.
Apart from pigs, each was also provided with five (5) hog starter feeds and 15 hog grower feeds in collaboration with the Department’s Regional Livestock Program and the International Training Center on Pig Husbandry (ITCPH).
The placement of sentinel pigs is one of the 4S of the Bantay ASF program in the Barangay (BABay ASF) of the Department of Agriculture. It aims to determine by raising a few pigs if there is still the presence of the virus in the cages.
Under the guidelines laid down by the National Livestock Program, there will be weekly monitoring of sentinel pigs storage areas to observe the condition of the pigs. There will also be some testing on pigs. If pen and sentinel pigs test negative on these tests, they may be able to re-breed domestic pigs.
