ANTIPOLO CITY, Rizal - Tanay Mayor Rex Manuel Tanjuatco states that the town is fully-equipped to receive vaccines in its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mayor Tanjuatco adds during a guesting at the Presidential Communications Operations Office's (PCOO) Network Briefing News program hosted by Assistant Secretary JV Arcena that the town has recently coordinated with a local facility capable of storing vaccine brands which require lower temperatures such as Pfizer and Moderna.
"Tanay is ready to receive vaccines such as Pfizer and Moderna which require -80 degrees freezer in Tanay due to talks with a former research facility of medicines which can store the vaccines. Tranport is also ready," states Mayor Tanjuatco.
Mayor Tanjuatco also adds that while the municipal government is prepared for a tripartite agreement with the national government and Astrazeneca, local frontliners are already to prepared to receive vaccines regardless of brand.
"The (medical) team is also ready to vaccinate and we are already giving them information of the possible effects of the vaccine to their bodies," he adds as he requests the Department of Health for vaccines.
Department of Health Eduardo Janairo, who also guested in the program, replied that Tanay is likely to receive vaccines (Astrazeneca and Sinovac) since the town has already submitted requirements to the agency such as names of medical frontliners to be vaccinated.
Meanwhile, RD Janairo assures the public that frontliners will all eventually receive vaccinations but must all continue to strictly observe safety protocols especially with the emergence of a new local variant of the virus.
Director Janairo adds that while there is currently no information on which strain is stronger, he reminds locals that it is nonetheless more contagious and easily spreads.
"However, since we now have vaccines, this will serve as our protection (against the virus)," Director Janairo states.
Tanay COVID-19 preventive measures
According to Mayor Tanjuatco has experienced a recent increase of COVID-19 cases especially in line with the gradual easing of restrictions.
Prior to the recent IATF guidelines which eased policies on checkpoints and travel requirements, Tanay was one of the strictest municipalities in setting up checkpoints and requiring medical certificates.
Even before the recent reimplementation of curfew hours in the adjacent National Capital Region, the 9PM to 5AM curfew in Tanay, Rizal was not taken down 5am and all citizens required to wear face masks and face shields in public places.
The mayor also states that the local government remains vigilant in apprehending safety protocol violators in order to prevent the spread of the virus.
"We also increased the visibility of local police and public safety officers," adds Mayor Tanjuatco.
Aside from being the economic center of Rizal Province's 2nd District, Tanay is home to various eco-tourism sites and is one of the most visited tourism destinations in CALABARZON in 2019.
"Even with the increase of tourists we still have a lot of law enforcers in duty," Mayor Tanjuatco adds.
Tanay is also in coordination with the Antipolo City Government through former Antipolo City Mayor and current Executive Assistant Jun Ynares for possible implementation of QR codes in the town similar to that of the city.
While that municipal government is waiting for the vaccines, local Barangay Emergency Response Teams (BERT) are on alert.
In cases where locals test positive and do not have isolation areas within their homes with separate bathrooms, the local government will transfer the patients to the local quarantine facility. (GG/PIA-Rizal)
