LUCENA CITY - The environmental group Tanggol Kalikasan Inc. are true to its commitment to help local fisherfolks.
In their joint collaboration with Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 3 and Feedmix Specialist Inc. II conducted Mini Ahon Third Wave recently, in Quezon Province.
A total of 112 families of fishers were the beneficiaries of boat repair kits which includes marine plywoods, copper nails and epoxy.
Twenty fishers from Disalag, 10 from Casiguran, 20 from Dinalungan, 20 from Dipaculo and 24 from Baler, Quezon were made to be the beneficiaries of this initiative to help fishers get back to their livelihood.
Mini Ahon aims to provide basic materials for the repairs of fishing boats that were damaged during the recent typhoon Ulyssess.
Total boat repair kits distributed as of even date are now at 498.
Moreover, in December 2020, Dumagat Community, in Nakar, Quezon, which has been a partner community of Tanggol Kalikasan since 2006, were among those who suffered and whose homes were damaged because of the onslaught of typhoon Ulysses.
There are 20 families of the Dumagat Tribe were the beneficiaries during the relief operations conducted by the group.
Environmentalists Asis Perez and Norbert Chingcuanco are stockpiling repair materials. As soon as dirt roads are passable, marine plywood, epoxy and rust-resistant copper nails will be distributed to isolated villages.
Fishers' homes will be visited to assess boat damage on the spot. The broken segments will be measured, and the exact plywood replacements sawed and handed over.
Neighbors will help sand, glue and nail up the boat. No time lost, no overhead cost, repair kits are conserved. Then onto the next fisher's hut. From restored earnings, beneficiaries can later pitch in for marine paint to top off the repairs.
Asis and Norbert will do away with the slow conventional way. That entails first tedious list-up of fishers, then written damage reports. Only then will repair kits be doled. By then fishing villages will be starving.
To strengthen its STOP coal and GO renewable campaign, Tanggol Kaliksan also held a Digital Content Creation workshop for youth KaliCasters (Environmental Broadcasters). The first session was on social media content creation which happened on January 15 and 16.
The second session was on visual storytelling through digital strips or e-comics which happened on January 22 and 23. The last session was on a youth radio program which happened on February 5, 6, 12 and 13. A total of 65 youth KaliCasters participated in the workshop.
According to Tanggol Kalisakasan Renewable Energy’ is the energy that comes from the sun, water and wind. Because it is from natural resources, it is inexhaustible. It is a huge help to our environment and to people because it gives energy to people without damaging our environment.
More than it helps our environment, it is also free because it comes from natural resources. Meanwhile, ‘Coal Energy’ is the energy that comes from charcoal. Because it is from charcoal it may be depleted in the future. Not only this, the coal energy also produces smoke that causes air pollution.
