IMUS, Cavite - Cavite governor said a sudden change in governance will only cause more instability now that the country is still grappling with the effects of the pandemic.

Gov. Jonvic Remulla said this amid rumors of military officers allegedly withdrawing support for President Rodrigo Duterte.

“Let me state my position so that everyone is clear: 1. I do not believe that a coup d’état can solve the country’s problems 2. I believe that the President should serve the remainder of his mandate 3. Resignation will not change anything. It will only cause further instability,” Remulla said in a Facebook post on April 20.

"In about five months, we’ll have the filing of candidacy. We will know then who is worthy to be the next president,” he added.

The governor reiterated that in the meantime, Filipinos should work together to stop the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and survive the challenges and uncertainty brought by the pandemic.

There have been reports of a Viber chat of retired and active military officials who are planning to withdraw their support for Duterte making rounds on social media.

The officials reportedly made the group after they were dissatisfied with how the administration handled issues involving the West Philippine Sea.

The messages that circulated on social media also stated that warplanes from different countries have been taking off and landing in Clark Airbase.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff Gen. Cirilito Sobejano has since denied the existence of such a Viber group and dismissed the messages as fake news.
