BATANGAS CITY - The Batangas Provincial Government and its private sector partners formally held the groundbreaking ceremony of the ₱ 12.77 million Batangas Evacuation Center to be built in Barangay Malainin in Ibaan on April 14, 2021.
The ceremony was held, through online audio and video teleconferencing, to initiate the construction of a 2-storey, multi-purpose facility that aims to respond to needs during a disaster or catastrophe.
The province’s new evacuation center is from a donation brought by the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and BPI Foundation, Inc., through its #TaaLove project, a donation drive formed to provide long-term and ongoing support in communities severely affected by the eruption of Taal Volcano in 2020.
Oversight of the construction of the multi-purpose facility will be spearheaded by the Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation (PDRF), a major private sector vehicle and coordinator in the country that enables and coordinates disaster management, with the help of its Project Safe Shelters initiative.
The Batangas Evacuation Center was also implemented in collaboration with private organizations led by the Batangas Provincial Government, led by Governor DoDo Mandanas, and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
Approximately 300 evacuees may be temporarily housed at the facility in the event of an evacuation, triggered by various disasters such as heavy rains, hurricanes, and earthquakes.
During this period of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the development of the design of the multi-purpose facility also considered its use as a health infrastructure facility.
BPI and PDRF officials joined the virtual groundbreaking ceremony, including BPI President Cezar Consing; Executive Director of BPI Foundation Owen Cammayo; Head of Sales and Service Channels of BPI Angelie King; PDRF President Butch Meily; and Executive Director of PDRF Veronica Gabaldon.
Capitol officials, led by Governor Mandanas, along with Vice Governor Mark Leviste, also fully supported the work; Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Joselito Castro; Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Jocelyn Montalbo; Provincial Planning and Development Officer Benjie Bausas; Provincial Engineer Gilbert Gatdula; and Supervising Administrative Officer of the Provincial Information Office (PIO) Jenelyn Aguilera, on behalf of Chief of Staff and PIO Head Maria Isabel Bejasa.
